GRAME is a public interest organization founded in 1989 in Montreal.

Did you know that? When it was founded, the acronym “GRAME” stood for Groupe de Recherches Appliquées en Macro-Écologie. This name was changed to the current one in 2018, at the same time as the logo redesign, as it was more indicative of the organization’s mission.

At a time when climate change is becoming humanity’s main challenge, and 75% of the world’s population lives in urban areas, GRAME is convinced that it is possible to build resilient communities that live in healthy, sustainable environments. This is its raison d’être, which it pursues with unabashed optimism.

GRAME recognizes that climate change amplifies social inequalities, and that the most vulnerable populations are the most affected, and often the first, by climate change; it takes this into account in its decisions and contributes to greater environmental justice.

With this in mind, GRAME is focusing its activities on four strategic priorities:

1. Encourage eco-citizenship from childhood
2. Thinking about and experimenting with cities that promote health and well-being
3. Promoting empowerment and resilience in vulnerable communities
4. Enabling citizens and organizations to take action

Questions - Greening

Greening means replacing the gray of concrete with the green of trees! GRAME’s greening services are designed to help nurture and nourish the urban forest by planting trees and greening streets, businesses and even citizens’ properties.

Why is greening important? Trees provide many benefits, such as air purification, heat reduction, water absorption and many others.

GRAME offers various greening programs. These include :

  • ICI, on verdit! is a GRAME program that offers low-cost greening services to industries, businesses and institutions (ICI). These services are provided by professional landscapers and experienced planters.

  • Visit VIVRE (Ville inclusive, verte, résiliente et équitable) project is a new GRAME initiative. It aims to develop a participatory greening and planning approach that will improve living environments and reduce the effects of heat islands on vulnerable populations, by creating islands of coolness.

GRAME is particularly interested in education and awareness-raising, focusing on schools and school-age children. The organization offers several conferences, workshops and programs, including :

The program Budding Readers program encourages a love of reading and nature in toddlers, fostering their overall development and helping to shape a generation that is responsible and connected to its environment.
